Pink (Humpy) Salmon
(Oncorhynchus gorbuscha)

Pink salmon, which are also known as "humpies" by fishermen, live only about two years. While spawning, the males develop an extremely humped back which produces a grotesque disfiguration. While the females do not change their body shape, both sexes change color from bright silver to pale gray on the back with a white to yellow belly.

Pink salmon begin migrating almost immediately after emerging from the gravel. Pinks move rapidly into tidal channels and nearshore nursery areas, often in schools and usually in darkness. After a few weeks to a few months in estuaries and nershore regions, humpies move offshore, where they migrate at sea for 12-16 months.
